Selene and Endymion - Nicolas Poussin, 1630
Endymion, the title Keats gives to his epic poem which he begins with these words, and the name of the legendary mortal of mythology who fell madly in love with the goddess of the moon has come to represent, in the minds of artists and for the hearts of all, the power of passion and the wonder of enduring enchantment. Endymion – both the mythic character, and the literary piece – stands today as a cultural symbol of eternal love; his story, revived by the beautiful words of this great romantic poet, materializes the centrality of such eternal love to the human experience. Defined by his interpersonal relations, characterized by his commitment to his love and to living such love, forever, Endymion effectually personifies the ideals upon which The Endymion Theatre Company has been founded.
The Endymion Theatre Company produces both classic and contemporary plays, diversified by way their cultural origin yet unified by the fundamental universality of their subject matter – love. It is the desire to, most simply, meaningfully connect with one another that lies at the heart of human life; it is this desire that gives form to human life; it is this desire that drives the succession of the species; and it is this desire that blurs the divisive bounds and connects collectives as it intertwines individuals. The Endymion Theatre Company is therefore grounded by its goal to tell only tales of love and to thereby propagate such perception of the potential and of our beings and the purpose of our personal existence.
Correspondingly, The Endymion Theatre Company aims to cultivate a shared sense of social responsibility by performing plays that not only ideologically inspire, but further, plays that practically produce positive effects. Each project is designed to not only stir and stimulate its New York City audience, but to raise funds for worthy global causes; the words of its actors are thus spoken in an effort to give a voice to those sadly silenced by circumstance, to those struggling as they suffer from injustice. The Company’s productions therefore provide a path upon which their audiences may connect with, and give back to, the world in which we all reside, together.
The Endymion Theatre Company will thus ensure that ‘the things of beauty’ crafted by the world’s greatest playwrights serve not just to decorate, but to enrich and to enliven this world and shall thereby truly remain the most valuable of ‘joys,’ which, like the reciprocal love Endymion felt for his goddess, will last ‘forever.’
